Which anniversary day applies to my modern region?
The 12 statutory anniversary days are tied to the original colonial provinces, not to modern regional council boundaries. The table below shows which anniversary day each modern administrative region conventionally observes. Coverage near regional borders is custom and practice rather than statute. Always check your employment agreement.
| Modern region | Anniversary day | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Northland | Auckland Anniversary Day | Northland observes Auckland Anniversary Day. Settled under the Waitangi Day Act 1976, which nationalised Waitangi Day and restored Northland's observance of Auckland Anniversary. |
| Auckland | Auckland Anniversary Day | |
| Waikato | Auckland Anniversary Day | Waikato conventionally observes Auckland Anniversary Day. This is custom and practice, not statute. Check your employment agreement for the exact entitlement. |
| Bay of Plenty | Auckland Anniversary Day | Bay of Plenty conventionally observes Auckland Anniversary Day. Custom and practice, not statute. |
| Gisborne | Auckland Anniversary Day | Gisborne conventionally observes Auckland Anniversary Day. Custom and practice, not statute. |
| Hawke's Bay | Hawke's Bay Anniversary Day | Parts of Hawke's Bay north of the 39th parallel historically observe Auckland Anniversary Day instead. This is descriptive geography, not employment law. Check with your employer if you are near the northern boundary. |
| Taranaki | Taranaki Anniversary Day | |
| Manawatū-Whanganui | Wellington Anniversary Day | Most of Manawatū-Whanganui conventionally observes Wellington Anniversary Day. Whanganui city historically observes Taranaki Anniversary Day, and parts of the north of the region observe Auckland Anniversary Day. Custom and practice, not statute. Check your employment agreement. |
| Wellington | Wellington Anniversary Day | |
| Tasman | Nelson Anniversary Day | Tasman District was part of Nelson Province historically and observes Nelson Anniversary Day. |
| Nelson | Nelson Anniversary Day | |
| Marlborough | Marlborough Anniversary Day | |
| West Coast | Westland Anniversary Day | The West Coast Regional Council covers both Buller and Westland districts. The statutory anniversary day is still called Westland Anniversary Day and applies across the whole region. |
| Canterbury | Canterbury Anniversary Day or South Canterbury Anniversary Day (Timaru, Mackenzie, Waimate) | |
| Otago | Otago Anniversary Day | Otago Anniversary Day has no single statutory date of local observance. Employment.govt.nz notes it is observed by agreement between employers and employees. The Monday closest to 23 March is the conventional date, but actual observance varies. Check your employment agreement. |
| Southland | Southland Anniversary Day | Southland Anniversary Day is observed on Easter Tuesday each year, the only anniversary day tied to a movable feast. |
| Chatham Islands | Chatham Islands Anniversary Day | The Chatham Islands share their anniversary date with Westland (the Monday closest to 30 November), reflecting the islands' status as a separate territorial authority. |
Frequently asked questions
How many anniversary days does New Zealand have?
New Zealand has 12 statutory provincial anniversary days, listed in section 44 of the Holidays Act 2003. They trace back to the original 19th-century New Zealand provinces. Each modern region observes one of them by convention, on top of the 11 nationwide public holidays.
Which anniversary day applies to my region?
It depends on which colonial province your modern region sits inside. For example, Northland and Waikato both observe Auckland Anniversary Day. Use the picker at the top of this page to find the conventional answer for your region. If you live near a regional border or your employer follows a different practice, check your employment agreement.
Is the modern-region to anniversary-day mapping legally binding?
Mostly no. The Holidays Act lists the 12 anniversary days but does not draw modern administrative boundaries around them. Coverage outside the historic provincial boundary is custom and practice. If your employer follows a different convention, that practice usually wins, so always check your employment agreement.
Why does Northland not have its own anniversary day?
Northland was never a 19th-century colonial province, so it has no statutory anniversary day under the Holidays Act 2003. Between 1963 and 1976, Waitangi Day was Northland's local holiday. The Waitangi Day Act 1976 made Waitangi Day a nationwide public holiday, and Northland workers reverted to observing Auckland Anniversary Day, which has been settled practice since.
Why is Southland Anniversary Day always on Easter Tuesday?
Southland Anniversary Day is the only anniversary day tied to a movable feast. It is observed on Easter Tuesday each year, so the date moves with Easter.
Do I get both Canterbury Anniversary Day and South Canterbury Anniversary Day?
No. Workers in the Timaru, Mackenzie and Waimate districts observe South Canterbury Anniversary Day on the fourth Monday of September. Workers everywhere else in Canterbury observe Canterbury Anniversary Day (Show Day) in November. You get one or the other, not both.
